This place was used to discard war remnants and metal items. Over time, it became an encroached settlement. In 1958-59, during the Caretaker Government, the area was cleared, and the residents were relocated to South Okkalapa New Town. Until 1989, the Shwedagon Pagoda Trustees could not utilize the vacant land, which became a waterlogged area during the rainy season and a barren field during the dry season. Permissions from relevant authorities were obtained to construct and donate this pond as a donation from the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. In 2005, during the comprehensive renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda, the Maung Wait family donated a statue of Shin Upagutta, a pavilion, a scenic pathway, and decorative fences around the pond. In 2023, as the pond reached around 30 years of existence, the Trustees organized extensive renovations with donations exceeding 3000 lakh in Myanmar kyats to ensure the pond\u2019s durability.
