The statue of the Shwedagon Bo Bo Gyi, along with the statue of Sakka, is located in a separate pavilion in the southwest corner (Saturday corner) of the main terrace. The Archangel is actually the mighty spirit known as Amrissa (Lord of Hmawbi). His duty is to protect the sacred relics of Lord Buddha as long as the world exists. Believers offer longyi (traditional garments), scarves, receptacle (offertory consisting of hands of bananas, coconut, etc., arranged in a receptacle), incense sticks, and candles as they pray to the Archangel, seeking fulfillment of their wishes. Novicehood making rounds at the Shwedagon Pagoda also stop to pay respects and make offerings at the Archangel’s shrine.<\/p>\n
